On February 6 2017 large parts ofBC received their annual snowfall amountsin a period of only 72 hours. Residents elsewhere in Canada are also used to receiving these huge dumps of snow in a short time. While these winter storms’ precipitation causes an increased risk of roof collapse this can be made worse depending on the temperatures in the days that follow.
With events such as chinooks and changing weather patterns bringing a big storm a warm period and then a cold period the snow load on the roof is affected. The snow melts and condenses into ice which is heavier. More snow will fall on top and repeat the process each time increasing the amount of weight the roof has to hold up and therefore increasing the chance of a roof collapse.
