In 2013 Canadian homeowners received $3.2 billion in claims repayments to cover damages after a record breaking year of damages and losses due to weather across the country. By far the most catastrophic damage was caused by flooding.
According to theNational Flood Insurance Program(NFIP) a six-inch flood in a 2 000-square-foot home will cause up to $40 000 in damage sometimes more. You don’t have to live in a flood-prone area to be at risk for flooding . While flooding can occur from rivers and lakes breaking their banks and flowing overland floods also occur when there’s excessive rainfall and rain-bursts melting snow landslides and other weather-related events.
Until recently most homeowners’ insurance policies didn’t include coverage for damage caused by flooding. Aviva became thefirst Canadian insurance companyto offer such protection through their overland water endorsement in the spring of 2015.
