A-WIN is excited to announce that Aviva Canada and Intact Insurance have been granted regulatory approval to offer ride-sharing coverage in Alberta. For those considering driving opportunities with the likes of Uber or Lyft – you have easy access to this important coverage!
Glen Cooper of Aviva Canada has said in an interview with the Financial Post that the endorsement can cost as little as $600 per year when it’s added to your personal car insurance policy. This is great news to have an alternative to getting an actual commercial vehicle policy.
The President and CEO of Aviva Canada, Greg Somerville, saw the need to get this coverage in place quickly. “With ride-sharing on the rise consumers have new options available to them; however there is a gap in insurance coverage which potentially leaves them without appropriate protection and benefits. When consumers needs change we must evolve our insurance solutions to respond.”
This isn’t the first time that Aviva has been quick to adapt and evolve. On June 2, 2015 Aviva became the first insurance company in Canada to offer Overland Water coverage. They saw a need that had to be filled after Alberta was devastated by floods in June 2013.
The Ride-Sharing Insurance coverage will be available with a few eligibility conditions:
- Maximum 8 passenger vehicle.
- Minimum six years licensed.
- No other commercial use.
- Up to 20 hours a week participating in ride-sharing.
Keep in mind, these eligibility conditions may change based on insurer and from year to year.
If you’re interested in driving for a ridesharing company, you should speak to your broker. Your personal auto insurance doesn’t cover any commercial use, including driving for Uber or Lyft. This is why you’ll need this endorsement or a commercial insurance policy, depending on your individual situation.
